Admittedly, the main reason for sewing my own clothes is because I enjoy the process. However, in recent years I have become more and more concerned with the environmental and social impact of the products we consume every day. And this includes clothes. I have more or less quit clothes shopping altogether, except for the rare necessities I can or am not willing to sew myself.
However, when it comes to fabric shopping, my conscience is
not that clear. I buy whatever fabric, wherever I can find it, and ridiculously
cheap bargains are my best friend. Somehow the concern I show regarding the conditions
under which high street clothes have been made has not at all transferred over
into my fabric buying habits.
One reason certainly is that I have no clue and very few
means as to finding out where the fabric I buy comes from. Transparency is even
rarer when it comes to buying fabric than with fashion.
That’s why Offset Warehouse seems like such a great idea. When
you buy fabric at Offset Warehouse you know that it has been produced with
social and environmental responsibility in mind.
Now I won’t buy all my fabric this way. That I know. But at
least on occasion I can alleviate my conscience by buying ethically. And
hopefully more online fabric suppliers will follow suit and show more
transparency on their websites as to how the fabric they sell was produced.
So what did I make with my Offset Warehouse fabric? I chose
a grey, white and pink striped chambray, and made it into a Hawthorn blouse.
The fabric is still available here, but be careful when you buy because it is only 106cm wide. So you will need extra.
This is unfortunately not my favourite make. I think I would have preferred the dress version, but just didn’t have enough fabric. But I hope I can find some way of wearing this blouse because I do like it on its hanger, just not so much on me.

The chambray was great to work with and I loved playing with
the stripes.
The Hawthorn also has great men’s shirt details I just love. Making sleeve plackets and cuffs just happen to be one of my favourite things to do. J
