My Me-Made-May Pledge

It feels like Me-Made-May has been around ever since I very first started blogging, but it may surprise you to hear that I have never ever taken part. I sure have taken part from the sidelines, watching the pledges, reports and daily photos pop up in my feed reader every day but I have never made a pledge myself.

Most years I was just too unorganized. May just came and went.

In later years I thought about it, but have had difficulties coming up with a good challenge for myself. I wear mostly handmade every day, with the exception of under-, outer- or gym wear. I don't think it would be an overestimation to say that more than 80% of my wardrobe is handmade.

Also, I practically never buy ready-to-wear, other than the above mentioned exceptions and some occasional charity shopping. And even that is rare. So, how will I challenge myself?

I have had a long think and this is the pledge I have come up with:

I, Stephanie from Starcross Sewing, sign up as a participant of Me-Made-May '14. I endeavour to wear at least one handmade garment each day with no repeats for at least 6 days a week for the duration of May 2014.

The crux is in the "no repeats". I want to challenge myself to wear those handmades I never ever wear, leaving myself a one-day a week loophole for my very favourites, which I will wear more than once a week.

So, the challenge is not so much in wearing all handmade, but wearing unloved, forgotten handmades. I'm hoping that MMM will help me in finding a way to incorporate these lonely closet orphans back into daily routine, or, if nothing else at least helps me decide, which items to give to a new, more appreciative home.

In order to get a sense of how many handmade items I actually have, I have taken a sort of inventory and have come with these handmades currently residing in my wardobe:

  • 21 dresses
  • 16 blouses
  • 10 handmade or refashioned tops
  • 9 skirts
  • 2 pairs of trousers
  • 5 cardigans - knit or crocheted by either me or my mum
  • 2 wearable bras
  • no jackets and/or outerwear

Anything look familiar?

I will not be able to wear everything in May, because there is a little too much for 31 days and because some handmades are not really appropriate for the season - that is chunky wintry cardigans or slinky summery dresses.

However, I will make my very best effort at really getting to the bottom of my closet and in finding ways of wearing old handmades in new ways.

How about you? Have you made a pledge?
