Madam President Dress + My Experience in Fashion School

Waving like a professional monochromatic Madam President

I made this dress as part of a fashion design and pattern drafting course I took about two years ago in Dublin. In the course we pretty much just brought along our own designs and then were helped drawing them, drafting them and sewing them up. In the 18 weeks I went to this course this dress is all I managed to sew. It was a very involved and detailed process :)

I learned a good few sewing techniques in the course and most importantly some of the skills I had were confirmed, which is something you really miss out on when you are an autodidact. I knew I could put together a dress but were my skills really up to scratch? Except for a couple of things my teacher was really adamant about (no snipping, only tailor's tacks!) I realized that autodidacticism had in fact taught me a lot.

The drafting skills we learned I was not so keen on. I didn't like their drafting system. I thought it wasn't precise enough and neither was the fitting. But who am I to tell the bona fide fashion teachers what a good fit is? So, I just went with it to see what the outcome would be. Well, I think the dress fits well below the waist but ended up far too tight around the bust (you can see drag lines) and the bust dart is too high. This bugged me so much that I ended up rarely wearing the dress. Sadness :(

For today I wanted to try something new and give you a few stats for the dress I made. I really like it when other bloggers do this and found some inspiration on House of Pinheiro, The Sew Weekly and Pattern Review to put together my stats questionnaire. So here they are:

Inspiration: Although, it does look like I wanted to copy the queen's style, this was not actually my intention. I simply wanted to go with a very basic silhouette but add a massive collar in a 60s style.
Pattern: self-drafted
Fabric: scrubs-green wool crepe and viscose lining
Notions: back zipper
Time to Complete: 18 weeks :)
Total Cost: ~ 30-40 €
First Worn: Spring 2011
Wear Again: I wore it again a couple of times but I've become too obsessed with the fit issues and also the more I look at it the color just reminds me of scrubs. What do you think? Should I wear it again?

  1. That's great that you had your own skills confirmed by the sewing course. I often think that there is not just one way to do something, but lots of ways, and we can just work out the way that suits us best.
I really like the neckline of your dress :)

  2. Confirming your sewing skills is is a great confidence booster. It's a shame that all your fitting issues were not addressed to your satisfaction though. I really like the neckline also :)

  3. I love the collar on this a lot. A bright red accessory like a belt would be a nice contrast and might take away the 'scrubs' association ;). It's funny that your teacher was adamant about tailor tacks!

    1. I love the idea of wearing it with a contrasting belt. I've never thought about that. Thank you for this tip! Ah, yes and my teacher looked all cross and shocked when I suggested snipping the seam allowances to mark a dart :)

  4. This is so well-made! You should totally wear it again! If you feel uncomfortable in it because of the scrubs colour (which I love btw!) wear it together with a blazer/cardigan in a more modest colour like black or creme!
