Ralph Pink Patterns

I have recently discovered new-to-me digital downloadable sewing patterns from a fashion designer called Ralph Pink. Some of you might know his site as he offers very good and free tutorials on illustrating and pattern making in Illustrator (and more) as well as a number of free downloadable patterns of basic slopers and a couple of designs in size 10-12:

Although his new online pattern shop opened in July this year, I could not find him on the massive list of independent pattern designers Threads magazine publishedwith the October/November 2012 issue. I only discovered his new pattern shop by accident:

He sells PDF patterns created in Illustrator with detailed, illustrated instructions and has a few unusual patterns, that are not easy to find elsewhere and worth checking out.

I'm particularly intrigued by his tights and stockings pattern. I'm a tights junkie and love wearing dresses and skirts with colorful tights in the winter. But they are often hard to get in a size that fits me and are worn down far too quickly. But, hey, making my own tights?! I love this idea.

The pattern is only £3.65 and offers lots of options for different kinds of tights and stockings but is unfortunately only available in UK sizes 10-12, so it will only work for me with lots of grading. Maybe it would be better to use the bottom part of the body glove, which comes in UK sizes 8-16 and adapt it to tights:

The body glove is a hilarious pattern, as I can't see myself wearing anything like it unaltered, but it would be great for all sorts of two-way stretch variation garments. Some of the other patterns also have more size options, like the Audrey Dress, which is £4.65 and comes in UK sizes 8-16:

I think the prices are reasonable and the instructions look easy enough to follow as you can see in this free sample. I know some of you don't like PDF patterns but I love them and am always glad when I can find something to easily download and print on the spot. Have you heard of his patterns or tried any of them? I'd love to see some reviews of these patterns.

  1. I'm definitely going to have to try those stockings too! Thanks for posting this. I came across his site awhile ago, but that was before he had all those patterns for sale. So nice to find a source with such different patterns. It never occurred to me before that I could sew my own stockings!

  2. I was also really fascinated when he put up some patterns. They're fun and adventurous. I bought the corset pattern out of curiosity a couple months ago--it'd be such a fun long-term sewing project. His site was definitely an invaluable starting point for me to draft in Illustrator, too. p.s. I love following your blog and glad to see you back! I really liked the entries about the Rundschau books.

  3. Never heard of these so thanks for the intro. I use Jalie patterns for tights-they've been awesome so far. I love pdf patterns as long as they come in a print at copy shop option ie. NO printing out single A4 sheets and taping them together like Sisyphus.. Will go check it out. And by the by, any chance of installing disqus so I don't have to deal with the recaptcha, everytime I want to comment? Sorry but I really can't stand recaptcha. Disqus handles spam blocking for you (it uses Akismet, the same algorithm that's built into Wordpress) and enables cross platform commenting while keeping tabs on comments, responses, pings and trackbacks. This means people from wordpress, typepad, livejournal, overblog etc will be able to keep track of responses without having to get a Google ID (OpenID is supposed to facilitate this but it doesn't actually work for non-Google IDs XS).

  4. Thanks for the tip with the Jalie patterns and disqus. I turned off the recaptcha for a while but just ended up getting far too much spam, so I had to turn it back on again. I hate it too. I'll definitely think about installing disqus. Thanks!
