Retro Self-Drafted Jeans

Why am I so slow at sharing my sewing projects? I used to upload photos of my sewing projects to burdastyle or my blog practically as soon as I finished them back in the good old days. These days I finish a project and often don't even take photos until many weeks of wearing (or abandonment in my closet) have passed.

I made these jeans almost a year ago and have been wearing them loads in the colder seasons. I drafted them myself, slightly modifying my other pants patterns, all drafted following Joseph-Armstrong's instructions.

The jeans have a side zipper and four pockets - two at the back and two at the sides. It took me ages to figure out how to create an inseam side seam pocket while still using a side seam zipper. It works but you need to make tons of small drawings and really wrap your head around it until you figure out the mechanics and sewing steps involved.

The jeans also have cuffs and I made a matching belt and fabric-covered belt buckle to go with them. I really like the fit of the jeans, the only thing I don't like about the jeans is that they are mad heavy. The fabric is a really heavy-weight denim, which is sometimes a little, well, cumbersome to wear, but on the plus side keeps me warm in the winter. I have been thinking of chopping off the cuffs to make them more light-weight, but this may only be a drop in the bucket of the problem. I would love to make similar pants, perhaps even the same pattern, but in a more light-weight fabric, which may also add less bulk to my hips ;)

All in all, I have concluded that retro jeans are definitely the shit. I mean who wants to wear these tiny, bum-displaying, super skinny jeans, when you have the possibility of covering your entire bum securely for the whole day while still being able to breathe and move. Beats me. ;)

  2. Lovely jeans. I've also made two retro inspired jeans and then I bought some Emerson Made ones. I'm a total convert to the style!

  3. Oooooooooooh these are gorgeous! Haha, while I do like my skinny jeans (as long as they are mega comfy/stretchy), I do like a good trouser that leaves a bit of air between skin and fabric too! That side zipper/pocket bit sounds tricky but well done for making such professional-looking (and lovely) jeans.

  5. They look great. I love the matching belt. I have been trying to work out the zip in the pocket thing so I can make some 50s style jeans.

  8. Thanks everyone for your lovely comments!

@ Camelia Crinoline: yes, the zip thing is a bit tricky, but it's doable. If I ever make this pocket style again I will share a tutorial. If you want some more close up photos of the pocket to figure out how it works, just send me an e-mail and I' ll send you some

@ Paunnet: No, it's not a Jasmine blouse, but it does look a bit like that, now that you say that :). It's one of the very first blouses I ever made, way back, and it's sadly a little small on me now. Wore it to death back in the day. It's the Ute blouse pattern on burdastyle. It used to be free back in the day but now it's $3.50. It's a great pattern. Both variations are really nice and it has princess seams which makes alterations easier. Something I definitely should have done back when I made it, ifI had only known what an FBA is....yeah, maybe I should make another one :)
