Liberty of London
On my recent trip to London I finally had a chance to visit the famous department store Liberty of London. My main reason to go, of course, was to see their fantastic collection of fabric. I was amazed at their luxurious fabrics and trimmings but the entire department store is a wonderful place to walk around in. I have taken some secret photos to share with you (although I was a little embarrassed walking around with my camera so I tried to take them as secretly as possible :)
This is their fabric, trimmings and haberdashery deaprtment:
I loved the little tables on which they displayed trimmings and buttons in glass jars:
... and some kitchenware:
Unfortunately, their farbic and particulary their trimmings and notions are on the pricey side and as I was scrimping my way through London, I walked away with nothing. I saved the little money I had for a trip to Goldhawk Road. Helene (aka carottesauvage) recommended Goldhawk Road to me as a place to find a great choice of reasonably priced fabric and I was not disappointed. Melissa from Fehr Trade has written a little review on fabric shopping on Goldhawk Road, so if you are planning a trip to London I definitely recommend you read her review.
And, of course, what would a visit to London be witout visitng the Victoria and Albert Museum. Unfortunately I missed the Yohji Yamamoto exhibiton by only a few days (so annoying!). It started at the beginning of March and will be on until July, so perhaps I'll make it back until then. I still saw a lot of nice things in the museum and even bought a fat quarter of one of their limited edition cotton prints. I love it and plan to make myself a little sewing bag with it.
Wow. That's one huge store. Sometimes I'm intimidated by big, fancy, pricy stores, and I think this one would scare me too. You're one brave girl! :)
ReplyDeleteI love Liberty though I tend to window shop or only buy small items - I've never bought fabric there. As you say, on the pricey side. I've still not visited Goldhawk Road. Must get there! The V&A is fab, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteThat store looks so classy, clean, organized, and well-lit! Someday I'll hopefully get to see it in person! :-)
ReplyDeleteoohhh...I'd love to go there!!
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing store! I've never bought Liberty fabric either - in Australia it goes for about $50/m - way to expensive!!
ReplyDeleteMy favourite store ever. The fabric department is the ghost of what it was only 5-10 years ago, but it's still amazing.
