17th of May

Today I went to the Norwegian embassy in Vienna to celebrate the Norwegian National Holiday, also simply known as the 17th of May. We stuffed ourselves with lovely food from the buffet and had wine and fun Norwegian conversation.

I like the Norwegian National Holiday because it always gives me a chance to wear my Norwegian National Costume, also known as bunad in Norway and I thought I'd share some pictures with you.

My bunad was handed down to me by my mother who wore this very dress herself for many years. It's a traditional costume from Buskerud, which is a county in the south of Norway close to Oslo. The bunad is worn with lots of silver jewellery and a handy matching bag, which is clipped onto the belt.

The embroidery is very elaborate and detailed and depicts the fauna and flora of the region. All the embroidery on my bunad was done my own grandmother many, many years ago. She loves doing embroidery and is very good at it.

I wish you all a nice week and "Gratulerer med dagen" to all you Norwegians out there.

  2. Beautiful bunad! How interesting that you celebrate the Norwegian constitution day in Austria. I have a bunad similar to yours, but mine is from Oslo. It belonged to my grandmother, who also embroidered it. My daughter has a bunad that origins from Aust-Agder where we com from. It is very beautiful, and I would really love to get one myself, too. You should come to Norway for the real thing one year. It would be very fun for you to walk down the streets in your bunad together with lots of other people wearing the same kind of attire.

  4. Oh, what a gorgeous costume! Mybe that's why they are more poular in Norway than in Sweden: because the Norwegian ones are prettier?!
    Maybe there's another reason too.
It's interesting, in Swedish, "bonad" means a piece of fabric that you hang on the wall, unframed and decorated with embroidery, paint or intricate weaving. I wonder if it's the same word from the start?
I had a quick walk through Stockholm on the 17th, and heard no less than 2 separate companies who spoke Norwegian, one was carrying flags. I cheered for them in my heart :-).
    Gratulerar med dagen i efterskott!
