Pant Inspiration

Thank you all for your kind comments on my purple dress! It's inspiring me to sew more...

The next project I have planned is a black pant. A recent look into my closet has revealed that I only own one pair of black pants - and not just any pair of black pants but the crappiest RTW polyester pant you have ever seen. So, I'm in dire need of a new pair!

My plan is to draft the pair myself and make them vintage-inspired with a high-waist, a fairly straight leg and a side zipper. As always at the beginning of a new sewing project I am full of inspiration and have scoured the internet for more. Here is one such specimen, which fulfills all my pant fantasies: a reproduction pattern found on Vintage Fashion Library.

I love the clean lines and the simplicity of this pair - something which is rarely found in shops anymore, where pants seem to be heavily adorned with all sorts of pockets and other design details.

Simplicity 3688 sports a similar Vintage reproduction pattern, which has raving reviews on Pattern Review. I'm particularly fond of member MagpieJen's three variations of this pant pattern.

The fabric I will be using is a medium-weight black wool I bought some time last year intending to make a skirt, but that somehow never happend. For more comfort I will also be lining these pants and I will probably make an inseam pocket on one side. Ideally I would make them on both sides, but I simply can't wrap my head around how to make an inseam pocket if there is already a zipper in the seam. So one pocket it will be.

But fist off, I'll be a good girl and make a muslin, so that there will be no evil surprises...

  1. Hi Stephanie! I don't know about an inseam zip with pocket, but there is a type of no-zip closure over a pocket, where the waistband buttons shut at your left side, and the pocket is open third-way down its curved side to allow you to step into the pants. The "outside" pouch of the pocket closes over the "inside" (closest to the body) (but pocket is still inside the pants) and buttons shut at the side of your waist (I don't know if this makes sense, but I hope so...

  2. Carolyn, I have sewed that skirt or pants closure in the pocket numerous times! It works great!
