An Excursion Into Corsetry - The Dirndl Corset

Have I told you that I've recently started making corsets? I never had a huge interest in making corsets because I have no real use for them in my life. But I do admire the skill and creativity that goes into making beautiful corsets.

In my job, my boss had decided that she would like to start teaching corsetry and I was made her little helper, sewing up a couple of corsets and preparing class notes and the best and easiest way to teach corset making in a 2-day workshop.

The first corset I made was inspired by Dirndl fashion (Austrian and Bavarian traditional dress). I made it out of white coutil (coutil is a special corsetry material that is very stiff and supportive) and trimmed my corset with red and white gingham bias tape and white lace.

I really did enjoy making the corsets I made for work. And although I have no use for corsets in my life, I am considering making more in different styles, if only for the joy of making them. The site Foundations Revealed, which I used to learn bra pattern drafting, is an excellent source of inspiration for corsetry and really does make me want to make more.

Have you ever attempted corsetry? Do you have any patterns that you recommend. In work we use the 1880 Late Victorian Corset Pattern by Truly Victorian for our beginner corsetry class.
