A Red Wool Christmas Beignet

I have had my eye on the Beignet pattern for a long time and was delighted when I found that it was available as a PDF download. Contrary to most people's opinion on PDF downloads I love them. Instant gratification and no shipping costs!

I made the Beignet in a nice quality red wool I bought on sale in a fabric shop in Oslo. I've had it in my stash for a long time and finally found the right project to match it up with.

This is me wearing my Beignet for Christmas and standing next to my grandmother, who came to visit us for Christmas this year. I have featured my grandmother, who is a crafty lady herself, in many a blog post before. She used to knit and still does a lot of embroidery. Here you can see a Norwegian cardigan she knit for me and here is a picture of my Norwegian bunad, or national dress, that my grandmother embroidered.

The skirt went together beautifully. Only the belt loops are a bit of a hassle to sew on. But belt loops always are. The Beignet is also easy to fit because it has so many seams that can be taken in or let out if necessary. I cut between a size 12 and 14 and only had to make slight adjustments.

I strengthened the side pockets by making, what I like to call, "pocket stops" (Is there a proper word for these?). They are just tightly sewn small zig zag stitches that help keep the pocket from flapping to the back inside and strengthen the seams at either end. I really like the look of them and finish all of my in-seam pockets like this.

And this time I even sewed in a little label that says "Made by Stephanie", which my mum gave me as a present a couple of birthdays ago and I usually only bother to sew in on presents I give to other people. But here it is on my very own skirt like a pat on the back.

I leave you with this photo of me at Christmas wearing my skirt, a cardigan my mum knit for me for Christmas (yes, she's a crafty lady too!) and seasonally appropriate head gear and slippers. Just in case you were sad that Christmas is already over.
