June Challenge Summer Dress Inspiration: The Simple Pattern

One, if not more, of my June Challenge summer dresses will most likely be made from simple dress patterns. Why? Because I am lazy? :) No, because simple patterns often make for more wearbale day-to-day dresses, which are exactly the kind of dresses I want to have sewn up by the end of June. Nothing that I feel too fancy in or have toiled over for so many hours that I think wearing it demands a special occasion of some sort. Just plain summer dresses, like the dress in this Lisette pattern:

It looks so simple and still so cute and versatile. The pattern is similar to the infamous Heidi dress on burdastyle which I have been wanting to make for ages:

I like some of the member projects a lot more than burdastyle's futuristic Heidi. Another nice pattern and very simple is this Vogue pattern. It looks a bit uninspiring as a fashion drawing but the line drawing shows a very pretty shape and yet a simple dress:

Another cute dress is this burdastyle magazine empire waist dress. I love empire waist dresses:

Sans bubble skirt the dress is even prettier like in this beautiful member creation.

I hope I get to make some similar dresses in June. Once I have a good simple pattern to work from I might actually - yes! - use it again. I have never ever used a pattern twice! Really! I somehow always get inspired by difficult and challenging projects I never make again. Wearability or ease of construction are rarely the reasons that get me sewing. This may make for interesting sewing but leaves me with very few everyday garments and an ever-increasing shelf of fabric. A well-fitted and simple dresses may actually make me use a pattern twice for a quick dress fix in the future. What do you think?

Have you used patterns more than once? Are they simple or difficult patterns? Do you like working with simple patterns? Or are you like me and tend to pick difficult and never-ending projects?

I hope to post some more dress inspirations this month to get us all motivated for June summer dress sewing. Tomorrow will be my first day sewing a dress for the challenge and I don't even know what to sew yet. It's decision-making time!

  1. The Lisette pattern is really cute. I've wanted to try the Heidi for ages too. I usually make patterns more than once because the second time is so much easier and faster.

  2. I think your choices will be very nice. I agree about simple being more versatile, plus it will help you stick to your plan and achieve your goals if you don't choose something too finicky as a project. I like to make things more than once if they aren't too memorable, I don't want to look like I'm wearing the same thing all the time. :-)

  3. I've used some patterns more than once, and they've definitely been the simple ones. Often the kind where you have a few subtly different bodice options in one dress pattern.

I like simple patterns for nice summer dresses as then you can pick a fun print and let the fabric shine.

  4. I've got one or two patterns I've used more than once, both skirt patterns.

Your idea of making up simple dresses is a good one particularly with the challenge of making one a week.

  5. The Lizette one looks nice, but I think those from tucks might need a little work. I just made the Heidi and it too needed a few mods, but they were rather easy. I look forward to seeing your progress.
