The Royal Engagement Dress

I'm not really one for keeping up with celebrities' lives and rarely know who is wearing what designer to which event, but when I saw this dress I just had to post about it. I'm a little late in the game, I guess, since the royal engagement was months ago already. But hey, the wedding is this week, so I'm still not too late.

Isn't her dress beautiful! The color is gorgeous and I love the way the silk jersey drapes. The layered detail across the midriff is stunning. The designer is Issa and the dress can still be gawked at from all angles on net-a-porter although it has long been sold out. The dress in net-a-porter features a knotted and tied-up version of the midriff section of the dress, which is pretty too.

Within a week of the royal engagement all sorts of high-street chains started selling their own replicas of the infamous dress. Chica Boutique sells one for £100 in different colors and it really does look very similar. Only it's not made of silk but viscose. Less classy.

Even Tesco had a knockoff of their own for less than £20. But, oh no, not glamorous at all! Nevertheless it apparently sold out within an hour.

And there is even a Barbie doll avaialble of Kate Middleton wearing this very dress. The Barbie doll may look something like Kate Middleton, but the dress has certainly lost all its glamour in the Barbie version. No royal blue and certainly not silk jersey.

So shall we go and sew up our own knockoffs? How about using this McCall's pattern. I really like this pattern and it's eerily similar to the Issa dress:

M5974
Or this very summery version sans sleeves from DKNY at Vogue. This one is pretty too and even without sleeves it looks kind of similar to Kate's dress from the front:

V1235
Ahh, sigh! If only I had more sewing time. And the guts to get working with jersey. Since my recent jersey disaster (that's a story for another time) I like to stay away from jersey. Well, but you skilled jersey seamstresses out there could certainly give these dresses a try. What do you think? Is the Issa dress worth replicating?

  3. I've made the M5974, and it's one of my faves. You'd just have to make the wrap straps longer to tie it in the front and back. Total cuteness! (As an aside, I get compliments every time I wear it!)

  4. This dress is really pretty. That blue is the perfect shade. Why we can't find fabrics like that at our stores in beyond me. Love the look for sure! I hope you make one.

  5. I bought some blue silk jersey and I have made M5974 two times already (with a third cut out). Perhaps the blue will be the last one. :)

  6. Hey Stephanie-- I used lycra 4way stretch for my dress, and skipped inserting the zipper. I found I could pull it on over my head quite easily. I bet you'll like it and it truly is the coziest dress I have. :)
